Alex Eala Eyes Asian Games Gold After US Open Exit

Alexandra Eala is maintaining a positive outlook following her third-round defeat at the US Open, where she lost a hard-fought match to close friend Iva Jovic at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Despite the setback, the 21-year-old Filipino tennis sensation is already focusing on her upcoming commitments, particularly the Asian Games in Japan starting September 19.

Eala expressed her enthusiasm for representing the Philippines, emphasizing how much she enjoys competing with the national team. She highlighted the unique atmosphere of team events compared to the individual grind of the WTA Tour. The Asian Games, held once every four years, offer a rare opportunity for her to compete for national pride alongside fellow Filipino athletes.

Throughout her US Open campaign, Eala was buoyed by passionate Filipino supporters who followed her matches, waving flags and cheering her on. She described the experience of playing at Arthur Ashe Stadium and feeling that support as indescribable and a privilege. Since then, she has made significant strides, becoming the first Filipino to win a WTA singles title and reaching a career-high ranking of No. 18 in the world. Her achievements have elevated her status to a national sports superstar in the Philippines.

Eala has also been a consistent presence in regional competitions, capturing the women’s singles gold at the Southeast Asian Games last December. She described the SEA Games environment as fun and memorable, underscoring her strong connection with the Philippine team.

Her participation in the Asian Games will require her to skip the China Open in Beijing, a WTA 1000 event, as the tennis competition in Nagoya overlaps with the Beijing tournament. Before heading to Japan, Eala is scheduled to compete at the Singapore Open from September 21 to 27.
