Asia News Network Unveils E-Book Celebrating Asia’s Cultural Heritage and Modern Innovation

SINGAPORE — The Asia News Network (ANN), an alliance of 20 leading news organizations across Asia, has launched a new digital e-book titled ‘Inside Asia’s Hidden Heritage Treasures’ that highlights the continent’s rich cultural heritage, modern advancements, and enduring spirit. Released under the theme “Bringing Asia Closer,” the publication aims to provide both regional and global readers with an authentic insight into Asia’s shared identity beyond typical geopolitical narratives.

The e-book offers a comprehensive exploration of Asia’s spiritual, cultural, and historical fabric, deliberately moving away from the headlines that often dominate international news. It presents a vivid tapestry of content that spans ancient civilizations, vibrant cultural centers, and lesser-known heritage sites, inviting readers to discover the continent’s unique treasures and tourism attractions, both historic and contemporary.

Datin Paduka Esther Ng, current Chairperson of ANN and Chief Content Officer of Malaysia’s Star Media Group, emphasized that the e-book celebrates Asia’s remarkable ability to modernize rapidly while maintaining a deep respect for its roots. She noted that Asia exemplifies how heritage and legacy can coexist and evolve, blending ancient traditions with cutting-edge technology and the world’s fastest adoption of new innovations.

Ng further highlighted the e-book’s focus on Asia’s “winning factors” that promote global unity. She described the region’s heritage as defined by endurance and survival, traits she considers the most accurate reflections of the Asian experience. This perspective underscores the resilience and adaptability that have shaped Asia’s development over centuries.

The project also addresses a longstanding issue in regional media: the tendency to rely on Western viewpoints when telling Asian stories. Mahfuz Anam, former ANN Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Bangladesh’s The Daily Star, recalled that the network was established 27 years ago to correct this imbalance. He described the new e-book as a vital part of a “journey of rediscovery” for the continent.

Anam explained that mutual understanding among Asian countries had often depended on how foreign news agencies portrayed the region, which sometimes resulted in problematic perspectives. This realization led 20 prominent English-language newspapers and national news agencies across Asia—from Japan to Pakistan—to form ANN, a platform for sharing news, views, and features about Asia from an Asian perspective for their respective audiences.

He added that increasing knowledge about one another fosters greater ease in interactions, appreciation of differences, and mutual respect among Asian nations. This ethos aligns with ANN’s mission to promote regional cooperation and understanding in an increasingly globalized world.

Looking ahead, ANN announced that a second e-book is already in development to continue exploring the vast cultural wealth of Asia.
