Bureau of Immigration Arrests Six Foreign Nationals for Alleged Illegal Employment in Binondo

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) apprehended six foreign nationals during a raid targeting illegal foreign workers at a shopping mall in Binondo, Manila, on July 29, the agency announced on Friday. The identities of the arrested individuals have not been disclosed by the BI as investigations continue.

According to the BI, the six foreigners were found engaging in retail activities that violated the conditions of their stay in the Philippines as well as the Retail Trade Liberalization Act, which restricts foreign participation in retail trade without proper authorization. The agency emphasized that these activities contravene Philippine immigration laws and regulations.

The BI stated that charges will be filed against the arrested individuals for violations of the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940, as amended. This legal framework governs the entry, stay, and employment of foreign nationals in the country, and unauthorized work is a punishable offense under this law.

In addition to the six foreign nationals, the BI is currently verifying the identities and citizenship claims of two other individuals who purported to be Filipinos. This step is part of the agency’s effort to ensure accurate documentation and to prevent the misuse of Filipino identity in illegal activities.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado issued a warning to foreign nationals who abuse their stay in the Philippines by engaging in unauthorized or illegal activities. He underscored the agency’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws strictly and to taking action against those who violate them.

Commissioner Viado highlighted that the Philippines remains open to law-abiding visitors and investors who comply with the country’s laws. However, he made clear that foreigners who disregard legal requirements should expect prompt enforcement actions, including arrest and deportation.

The recent arrests form part of the BI’s ongoing operations to curb illegal employment and other immigration violations involving foreign nationals. The agency has intensified its efforts to monitor and apprehend individuals who exploit loopholes or violate the terms of their visas, particularly in commercial sectors such as retail trade.

The BI’s enforcement activities are aligned with broader government directives to protect Filipino workers and legitimate businesses from unfair competition posed by unauthorized foreign workers.
