Caitlin Clark Accepts Responsibility for Indiana Fever’s Overtime Defeat to Las Vegas Aces

INDIANAPOLIS — Caitlin Clark took full responsibility Thursday night for the Indiana Fever’s narrow 86-84 overtime loss to the defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces. After reviewing the stat sheet and reflecting on her eight turnovers and two missed free throws in the final seconds of regulation, Clark acknowledged those mistakes were critical to the outcome.

Clark, a three-time All-Star recently named to the FIBA Women’s World Cup team, said the missed free throws with seven seconds left were especially frustrating because they are shots she normally makes. One of those misses prevented the Fever from securing a two-possession lead late in the fourth quarter, which she identified as a key moment that contributed to the team’s defeat.

Despite scoring 20 points and providing eight assists, Clark’s night was marred by costly errors. She also made two go-ahead three-pointers in the last four and a half minutes of regulation, but the Fever were unable to hold on to a 20-point halftime lead. The team’s collapse began when Jackie Young scored a franchise-record 15 consecutive points spanning the end of the second quarter and start of the third, shifting momentum to the Aces.

Chelsea Gray capitalized on Indiana’s late-game mistakes, hitting a buzzer-beating three-pointer to tie the game at 75 after Clark’s missed free throws, and then another buzzer-beater in overtime following Clark’s final turnover, which was forced by A’ja Wilson. Clark finished the game shooting 7 of 20 from the field and 2 of 10 from three-point range, with four fouls and three rebounds.

Clark did not offer excuses for the loss, emphasizing that despite the team’s struggles in the third quarter, they continued to fight and positioned themselves to win. She said the costly errors were hers alone and that it is her responsibility to help the team secure victories.

Kelsey Mitchell, who was named WNBA Player of the Month in July, also missed a crucial free throw with 9.2 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Instead of fouling to prevent a tying three-point attempt or securing the loose ball, the Fever allowed Gray to tie the game. Coach Stephanie White highlighted that Aliyah Boston’s perfect timing on a loose ball contributed to the Aces’ comeback and noted the Fever gave up 18 points off turnovers.

White admitted to a coaching mistake as well, acknowledging she did not call a timeout at the end of overtime when the Fever were struggling to get a shot, which led to Clark’s turnover. However, she stressed the importance of keeping players positive in difficult moments, recognizing that athletes already feel the weight of missed free throws and plays.

The loss marked a painful setback for the Fever, who had held a significant lead but were undone by turnovers and missed opportunities in the closing moments. Clark’s willingness to accept blame underscores her leadership role and determination to improve as the team looks ahead.
