Grab Philippines Launches 'Grab for Family' Feature to Enhance Teen Ride Safety and Parental Oversight

MANILA, Philippines — Grab Philippines has introduced a new feature called "Grab for Family" designed to give teenagers aged 13 to 17 greater independence in booking rides while providing parents with real-time visibility and enhanced safety controls throughout their journeys. This development responds to the growing demand for shared mobility solutions within Filipino households, where Family Account sign-ups have more than doubled over the past year, and family members have taken approximately 70% more rides in their first month of use.

The "Grab for Family" feature allows parents to link their teen’s account to a Family Account, enabling them to receive live trip updates and monitor rides on a real-time map. Parents can also communicate directly with their teen or the assigned driver through an integrated chat function and access additional safety tools designed to protect young passengers.

CJ Lacsican, Head of Mobility for Grab Philippines, emphasized the company’s commitment to safety and peace of mind for families. He explained that the new feature aims to make it easier for parents to stay informed about their teenagers’ journeys while empowering teens with the confidence to travel independently.

Key components of the feature include Live Ride Tracking, Trip Monitoring, and automated trip notifications, all integrated with Grab’s existing Safety Center and Emergency Help functions. Parents receive updates at critical points during the ride, such as when a driver is assigned and vehicle details are available, when the teen is picked up, upon arrival at the destination, and when the trip is completed. A live map also allows parents to follow the ride in real time.

The system is designed to alert parents to any unexpected stops or route deviations. Additionally, the platform can prompt the teen passenger through in-app messages to confirm their safety during the trip, providing an extra layer of reassurance.

To prevent teens from boarding the wrong vehicle, the feature includes a Ride PIN verification step. Before the trip begins, the teen and driver must match a unique in-app code, ensuring the passenger enters the correct car. Furthermore, the 3-Way Chat function facilitates communication among the teen, driver, and parent within the app, allowing them to clarify pickup points and other trip details without switching platforms.

Another safety measure is AudioProtect, which enables encrypted audio recording on both the teen’s and driver’s devices during rides. These recordings remain encrypted and inaccessible to either party and are only reviewed by Grab’s safety team if a formal report is filed, ensuring privacy while providing evidence if needed.

The introduction of "Grab for Family" reflects Grab Philippines’ ongoing efforts to enhance ride safety for younger users while balancing the need for independence and parental oversight. The feature integrates seamlessly into the existing Grab app, allowing parents to invite teens via mobile number or unique invitation links and manage shared payment methods and safety settings according to their household’s preferences.
