Jimmy Alapag Accepts Responsibility After NLEX’s First Defeat in PBA Governors’ Cup

The defeat ended NLEX’s perfect six-game winning streak in the tournament’s first round.

The Road Warriors had built momentum with six consecutive victories but struggled to maintain their usual intensity in the game against Terrafirma. Despite rallying from an early deficit, NLEX fell short, losing 114-109. Alapag acknowledged that the team’s slow start was uncharacteristic and set a negative tone for the rest of the match.

In a video posted on the team’s official social media page, Alapag said he needed to improve his preparation of the players to ensure they were ready to perform at their best. He pointed out that the sluggish beginning allowed Terrafirma to execute their offensive game plan effectively. Additionally, he noted that NLEX’s defensive communication could have been better throughout the contest.

The loss was a setback for NLEX, who had been the last team in the conference to remain undefeated. Their strong run was largely fueled by the impressive performances of import DeQuan Jones, who contributed significantly on both ends of the floor, guard Schonny Winston’s defensive efforts, and Robert Bolick’s balanced role as a scorer and playmaker.

Looking ahead, Alapag expressed optimism about the team’s opportunity to bounce back quickly. NLEX was scheduled to face TNT at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on the following Tuesday, a matchup that could present a challenging test for the Road Warriors. Alapag emphasized the importance of regrouping and preparing for the next game without dwelling on the recent loss.

Earlier in the week, Alapag had guided NLEX to an 88-83 victory over TNT, his former team, in a closely contested game at Ninoy Aquino Stadium. That win was considered one of the toughest challenges for the Road Warriors before their defeat to Terrafirma.
