Philippine DFA Condemns Anti-Chinese Casket Displays Across Metro Manila

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) issued a strong condemnation on Friday against the appearance of wooden caskets bearing anti-Chinese and anti-Communist Party of China messages found in various locations across Metro Manila. The department emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting foreign nationals and officials residing in the country amid this disturbing development.

The DFA clarified that it does not condone any acts or threats of violence directed at individuals, including foreign nationals or officials. It described the casket displays as irresponsible and disrespectful acts that cannot be tolerated in a society that values peace and security.

While reaffirming the right to freedom of expression, the DFA underscored that this right does not extend to threats of violence or actions that jeopardize the safety and security of others. This statement came in response to the discovery of five wooden caskets placed in public areas, each marked with hostile messages against China and the Chinese Communist Party, some containing direct threats aimed at Chinese officials.

According to the National Capital Region Police Office, the caskets were found in multiple locations: Santa Cruz in Manila; Barangay 54 in Caloocan City; Barangay South Triangle and Barangay Santa Teresita in Quezon City; and along Gil Puyat Avenue in Makati City. The police have launched an investigation into the incident, reviewing closed-circuit television footage and other evidence to identify those responsible. As of the statement, no arrests have been made.

The DFA stressed that these provocative displays do not represent the Philippine government’s approach to foreign relations nor the manner in which Filipinos express political criticism or dissatisfaction, even on sensitive issues. The department reiterated the government’s responsibility to ensure the safety and security of foreign nationals and officials, citing obligations under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

In coordination with law enforcement agencies, the DFA is closely monitoring the investigation and supports efforts to determine the circumstances behind the incident and hold accountable those responsible for this reckless act. The department’s statement reflects the government’s broader commitment to maintaining diplomatic decorum and public order, especially in matters involving foreign relations.

The incident has raised concerns about the potential escalation of tensions and the safety of foreign communities in the Philippines.
