Rain or Shine Edges Meralco 85-83 in Defensive Battle at PBA Governors Cup

Rain or Shine Elasto Painters secured a hard-fought 85-83 victory over the Meralco Bolts in the 2026 PBA Governors Cup on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Elasto Painters rallied from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to notch their fourth consecutive win in the conference.

Aaron Fuller played a pivotal role for Rain or Shine, finishing with 25 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block. Despite shooting just 9-of-19 from the field and committing nine turnovers, Fuller delivered the game-winning layup with 39.4 seconds remaining. Supporting him were Deo Cuajao with 12 points, and Jhonard Clarito and Caelan Tiongson who each contributed 11 markers.

Rain or Shine started strong, building an early 11-point lead. However, Meralco responded aggressively, especially in the third quarter. The Elasto Painters held a 62-55 advantage entering the final period, but a 20-6 run by the Bolts, capped by a three-pointer from Chris Newsome, swung momentum and gave Meralco a 75-68 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Meralco maintained control early in the final frame, holding a 79-72 lead with just over nine minutes remaining. Rain or Shine then mounted an 11-2 run, highlighted by a layup from Clarito that put them ahead 83-81 with under two minutes left. Cliff Hodge tied the game at 83-all with 1:44 remaining, but the Elasto Painters' defense tightened, aided by an unusual distraction when a stray cat wandered onto the court, disrupting Meralco's offensive flow.

In the decisive moments, Adrian Nocum found Fuller sealed inside, who then protected the ball from Hodge and scored the go-ahead layup. Meralco had opportunities to respond, but Luis Villegas blocked Antonio Hester, and Chris Banchero missed a layup. Nocum missed two crucial free throws, and although Bong Quinto was fouled in the final seconds, he missed both attempts as time expired.

Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao acknowledged the team's struggles, calling it one of their worst games, but emphasized their ability to find ways to win despite missing 14 free throws. He credited their defensive effort for limiting Meralco to 36 percent shooting from the field, turning the contest into a low-scoring, defense-oriented game.

For Meralco, Newsome led with 16 points, five assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Hester contributed 15 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, and a steal, while Hodge and Javee Mocon each added 14 points. Despite their efforts, the Bolts suffered their third consecutive loss, dropping to a 2-4 record, while Rain or Shine improved to 4-2 in the standings.
