Remy Martin Reaffirms Aspiration to Play for Gilas Pilipinas

Filipino-American guard Remy Martin has reiterated that playing for Gilas Pilipinas remains his ultimate basketball dream. Martin, who is currently set to represent the Philippine-based Strong Group Athletics (SGA) in the upcoming William Jones Cup, expressed his deep desire to don the Gilas jersey in the future during an open practice session with SGA.

Standing six feet tall, Martin told reporters that representing the Philippines on the international stage would be a dream come true, one he values even more than making it to the NBA. He shared that he has followed Gilas Pilipinas since his youth and has always aspired to compete on that platform.

However, a significant obstacle remains for Martin’s eligibility to play as a local for Gilas under FIBA rules. The international basketball federation requires players with dual citizenship to have obtained their Philippine passport before turning 16 years old. Martin acquired his passport after that age, which currently disqualifies him from playing as a local.

Martin expressed hope that the Philippine basketball authorities and FIBA will recognize that he has been a dual citizen for a long time, despite the late passport acquisition. He believes that with the right support and advocacy, there is a strong case for his inclusion in the national team.

Aside from the World Cup and other FIBA-sanctioned events, Martin noted that he could potentially represent the Philippines in the Asian Games, where only a Philippine passport is required, regardless of the age it was obtained.

He emphasized his confidence in his basketball abilities and readiness to contribute at the highest level. Martin acknowledged that team fit and coaching decisions are factors beyond his control but remains optimistic about his potential role in helping the Philippines win.

Martin also revealed that if given the opportunity, he would have played in the Philippines for years already. He expressed eagerness to seize any chance to represent the country and contribute to its basketball success.

For now, Martin will focus on competing with Strong Group Athletics in the Jones Cup, where the team aims to secure a historic third consecutive championship. He described the timing of joining SGA as perfect in his career and expressed pride in potentially being part of a rare three-peat achievement in a Filipino uniform.

The last team to win three straight Jones Cup titles was Iran from 2009 to 2011. Martin said he is committed to showing his passion for the game and his love for representing the Philippines through this opportunity.
