SB19 Makes History as First Filipino Act to Perform at Lollapalooza

Filipino pop group SB19 made history as the first homegrown Filipino act to perform at the renowned Chicago music festival Lollapalooza. The P-pop band took the stage at the festival’s Allianz stage—one of the largest and most prominent stages at the event—for an hour-long set that showcased their hit songs and new material.

SB19’s performance began shortly after 3 p.m. local time on July 30, which meant many Filipino fans were watching live via early morning livestreams and watch parties on July 31. The group opened their set with energetic renditions of “Dam” and “Gento,” immediately engaging the crowd and introducing themselves to the Chicago audience.

One member, Stell, energized the crowd by asking if they were ready for an unforgettable experience, while Josh made light of the summer heat, attributing it to the enthusiastic audience. The group reflected on the significance of their appearance, emphasizing the milestone they were achieving as representatives of Filipino culture on a global stage.

Justin and Pablo expressed how meaningful it was for SB19 to perform at Lollapalooza, with Justin noting that the audience deserved the best from performers. Pablo highlighted the unity of the group, saying that despite their different personalities, they become one on stage and hope the audience feels that connection in every song.

The band then introduced their newly released single “Lawless,” marking its first live performance. They continued with “Emoji” before slowing the pace with emotional ballads “Mapa” and “Wakas.” During these moments, they spoke about the importance of Filipino artists gaining international recognition and empowering their culture through music.

Josh, speaking on behalf of the group, emphasized their role as cultural ambassadors and expressed hope that this debut would not be their last appearance at such a prestigious festival. Stell took the opportunity to thank various individuals and organizations that supported them.

In a surprise moment, SB19 performed a cover of the late Francis M’s “Mga Kababayan,” a track they contributed to for the soundtrack of the upcoming animated film "Forgotten Island." The group then closed their set with high-energy performances of “Visa,” “Dungka!,” and “Crimzone,” leaving the stage to enthusiastic applause.

This year’s Lollapalooza lineup also features major international artists such as Charli XCX, Tate McRae, Lorde, Jennie Kim of Blackpink, The Smashing Pumpkins, and The XX, among others. The inclusion of SB19 marks a significant milestone for Filipino music on the global festival circuit, highlighting the growing international presence of P-pop and OPM (Original Pilipino Music).
