Senate Honors SB19 for Historic Lollapalooza Performance, Recognizing P-pop's Global Rise

A Senate resolution was filed on July 31 to formally commend Filipino pop group SB19 for their groundbreaking performance at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago, marking a significant milestone for Original Pilipino Music (OPM) on the international stage. Senator Bam Aquino introduced Senate Resolution 545 to acknowledge the group's impactful appearance at one of the world's largest music festivals.

Aquino highlighted that SB19's Lollapalooza set demonstrated the growing global recognition of Filipino artists and expanded the presence of Philippine music on a premier festival platform. He praised the group’s artistry, professionalism, and steadfast pride in their Filipino identity, describing them as inspiring cultural ambassadors who promote Philippine culture and foster greater appreciation for the country worldwide.

The five-member ensemble, composed of Pablo, Stell, Justin, Josh, and Ken, delivered a 48-minute performance on the Allianz stage on the afternoon of July 30 in Chicago, which corresponded to early morning hours of July 31 in Manila. Their setlist featured several of their popular hits, including “Dungka,” “Dam,” and “Gento,” as well as two notable ballads, “Mapa” and “Wakas.”

In addition to their established songs, SB19 introduced two new tracks during their set: “Lawless” and “Emoji,” the latter being a collaboration with Taiwanese singer Jolin. They also teased a cover of the late Francis Magalona’s classic rap anthem “Mga Kababayan,” which is part of the soundtrack for DreamWorks’ upcoming Filipino animated film “Forgotten Island.”

The group closed their performance with the crowd favorite “Crimzone,” leaving the audience energized even after they exited the stage. SB19 expressed on social media their disbelief and gratitude for performing on such a global platform, emphasizing that their achievement was not only theirs but also for everyone who supported and believed in them.

Earlier in July, the Department of Tourism officially named SB19 as Philippine tourism ambassadors, a role they share with fellow P-pop group BINI. This appointment recognizes their contributions to promoting Philippine culture and tourism through their music and international presence.

Looking ahead, SB19 is scheduled to perform at the 25th anniversary of the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan on August 14 and 15, continuing their momentum on the global music scene. Their historic Lollapalooza appearance and subsequent recognition by the Senate underscore the expanding influence of Filipino artists in the international creative economy.
