Teatro Panalo Festival Launches to Support New Filipino One-Act Plays and Musicals

The organizers behind the CinePanalo Film Festival have introduced Teatro Panalo, a new theater festival dedicated to original one-act plays and musicals by Filipino playwrights. Produced and managed by Wishbone Collective, Inc., Teatro Panalo aims to discover and nurture fresh Filipino theatrical works by providing selected playwrights with dramaturgical support, production resources, and opportunities to present their plays before live audiences.

The festival will select twelve original works for full production, comprising eight straight plays and four musicals. Each chosen playwright will receive a financial compensation of P100,000. Beyond the festival, one straight play and one musical will be awarded full-length development grants, allowing these works to undergo further artistic refinement and potentially reach commercial production.

Festival director Vincent de Jesus emphasized that Teatro Panalo is designed to offer playwrights a platform to develop their stories with guidance from seasoned theater practitioners. He highlighted the search for authentic voices and fresh perspectives, suggesting that the next significant Filipino play might be hidden in an unopened script.

The festival welcomes submissions from both amateur and professional Filipino playwrights aged 18 and above. Entries can be written in either Filipino or English and must be original one-act works intended for approximately 35 to 40 minutes of stage performance. However, adaptations, translations, and AI-generated creative works are not eligible. The festival encourages a variety of genres, styles, and theatrical forms.

Interested playwrights must submit their entries by 11:59 p.m. on September 11, 2026. The submission process includes providing a completed script, synopsis, logline, a development vision statement, and supporting documents. Musical entries are also required to include demo recordings. Complete festival mechanics, eligibility criteria, and application details are available through the Teatro Panalo submission form.

Following the submission deadline, a shortlist of 16 straight plays and eight musicals will be announced on October 6. Shortlisted playwrights will present their works to the Selection Committee between October 14 and 16. The final lineup of eight straight plays and four musicals will be revealed on October 16. Selected playwrights will then enter a professional incubation program that offers dramaturgical guidance and production support in preparation for staging.

The inaugural Teatro Panalo festival is scheduled to run from February to March 2027. This new initiative complements the ongoing CinePanalo Film Festival, which is entering its third year and will take place from September 23 to October 4, 2026. The film festival will showcase seven full-length films and 20 student short films, continuing its mission to support Filipino storytellers across different mediums.

The seven full-length films selected for the CinePanalo 2026 festival include “Wantawsan” by Joseph Abello, “Mono No Aware” by BC Amparado, “Apol of My AI” by Thop Nazareno, “Patay Gutom (Dead Hungry)” by Carl Papa and Ian Pangilinan, “Beast” by Lawrence Fajardo, “Stuck on You” by Mikko Baldoza, and “Multwoh” by Rodina Singh. These projects reflect the festival’s commitment to showcasing diverse and compelling Filipino narratives.
