Xabi Alonso Welcomes Mykhailo Mudryk Back to Chelsea After Successful Doping Ban Appeal

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Mykhailo Mudryk will rejoin the club this week during their pre-season tour in Hong Kong, following the Ukrainian winger’s successful appeal against a four-year doping ban. Alonso emphasized that while Mudryk will be welcomed warmly, the club will take a cautious approach to reintegrating him into the squad after his long absence.

Mudryk, 25, was suspended in 2024 after testing positive for a low concentration of meldonium, a substance prohibited under anti-doping regulations. The winger had not played since November 2024 due to the ban. However, recent developments saw the Football Association and the World Anti-Doping Agency resolve his appeal, allowing him to resume his professional career.

Alonso expressed relief and happiness for Mudryk, acknowledging the mental and emotional challenges the player endured during his suspension. Speaking from Sydney after Chelsea’s 2-1 friendly loss to Tottenham Hotspur, Alonso said the club wants Mudryk to feel fully part of the team again, noting that he has lacked that connection for a significant period. The manager also highlighted the support Mudryk has from the club, teammates, and staff.

The Ukrainian will join Chelsea for the next leg of their pre-season fixtures, including a match against Juventus in Hong Kong. Despite the excitement surrounding his return, Alonso cautioned that Mudryk’s return to full fitness and match readiness will take time. He pointed out the difficulty of transitioning from training alone to participating in team sessions and competitive matches.

Mudryk’s appeal was filed with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and changes to World Anti-Doping Agency procedures meant that if the same test result had occurred under current rules, charges would not have been brought. This procedural shift played a key role in overturning the initial ban.

The winger joined Chelsea in 2023 from Shakhtar Donetsk for a reported £62 million ($83 million), making him the most expensive Ukrainian player at the time. Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi, who previously coached Mudryk at Shakhtar, also expressed his happiness at the player’s return. De Zerbi described Mudryk as a talented and personable individual and hoped he could demonstrate his abilities in the upcoming season.

Alonso acknowledged the uncertainty regarding how quickly Mudryk will regain his form and fitness but stressed the importance of patience and gradual progress.
